Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas!

christmas-sproutThe tree is on, candles lit, breakfast’s nearly ready and I’m about to turn into a whirling Christmas dervish.

For the second year running, most of our Christmas lunch is homegrown. Yesterday Himself and I picked a big bag of kale, leeks, an enormous swede, teeny tiny baby sprouts (really must grow them earlier next year!) and for the first time, huge and delicious parsnips! With at most one food mile and perfectly fresh, it’s one of the most satisfying things in my allotment year. In store I’ve still a big sack of potatoes and a few squashes, so we aren’t short of veggies.

I would put a picture up, but, as we also celebrate Norwegian Jul on 24th, most have been cooked. Along with a mammoth turkey crown that I will be happily tucking into for weeks. Cold turkey sandwiches with a big slice of iceberg lettuce and plenty of homemade hot sauce. Yum!

We will also be eating many many biscuits, which I have been baking for what seems like forever:

Tomorrow I’ll be planning next season’s growing, totting up the yearly harvest totals and sneaking compost into the flat to warm up for sowing onions and chillies. For now, wherever you are, whatever you are doing, I hope you have a peaceful and happy Christmas.

  1. Next year I hope to have all home grown veggies for Christmas lunch, so thank you for the encouragement that it can be done. However I did make a kransekaka as our Christmas treat! Happy New year

    • It defintely can be done – though if I’m to grow everything I need to sow a few red cabbages…A whole Kransekake is very impressive and a lot of work! I make it as sticks and freeze so I can eke them out – the hazelnut blobs in the pictures are pretty much the same mix, just with ground hazelnuts. Just as delicious but a lot more delicate.   2. Thank you Beryl. We also ‘do’ the 24th and the 25th. I hope that enough chili plants survive in the conservatory, but will start sowing sweet peppers before long. I have a big container full of chilis in the freezer 🙂 . Yes here also most veg from garden/freezer/store. No swede (forgot to sow) but lovely winter squash.     • I can’t wait to get started on the chillies – one of the seed circles I’m in arrived today and there are some very tempting seeds in there: Burkina Yellow and Bishop’s Hat to name just two….Here’s hoping 2017 is a fantastic season! x
