I’ve delivered 50-odd strawberry runners to the school, and am growing them some courgettes and squash. They have done a lot since I was last there: set up some beds, cleared a lot of tarmac, built a shed and a fence, and got their compost space ready.

On the plot the kale has been composted to make space for peas, if the slugs don’t get them that is. But no digging till there are no puddles. There’s still a bit of time, but I’m realising that if this rain keeps up perhaps I might not have all the beds sorted out for everything I want to grow this year.

At home I’ve sown some more beans (Minidor and Trail of Tears), the cucumbers (Diva, White and marketmore) are nearly all up and most of the squashes are up too. Gherkins, parsnips and more beetroot need to be sown still. Everything is living on the balcony, which is perhaps not the warmest or sunniest spot, but they will at least be thoroughly hardened off!
